EMERGENT PRACTISE

In an EMERGENT SCIENCE, one doesn't necessarily know what one's current modus operandi is, or what the current status of the research is. One might not even know what research project one is currently engaged in. This, I believe, is true of an EMERGENT SCIENCE.

The scientific research is EMERGENT in the sense that it is AMBIENT: It waits and listens, there is no shouting. One also works in an ITERATED manner: One continuously re-designs experiments and starts from scratch often. In fact, the entire science starts from scratch at almost every moment. There is lots of pivoting.

It is also ANTICIPATORY. It has no full-blown specification of what it is doing. It sits and listens, waits for answers to come. It is SPECULATIVE, yet the agent actively searches through relevant search spaces for new avenues, and so involves a process of DISCOVERY. One DISCOVERS the Emergent Science as it arrives.

Also, Everyone is not always on the same page, because no one is on any given page. It is NON-LINEAR. The Artist-as-Interface discovery agent listens on Port X, iterating, capturing ambient flows.

20 Years of (Taking) Soundwalks

I like to leave the house with my recording equipment and not a single idea as to where I will be going. I let my ears decide where they will take me. I have been doing this for a good 20 years straight.

I have amassed a gigantic database of sounds from this and neighboring regions. I like to think of it as an important part of my personal archives, a sort of Soundmap-in-the-Making.

I am perpetually reinventing myself in this regard. Recently I added GPS coordinates to the mix, and now I have added the power of the Stopwatch. The stopwatch gives me direct feedback on how long things are taking. I can even use it to calculate the general speed of trains. I can use it to tell the distance birds or other sonic phenomena are from me. It is equivalent to the ruler and compass to a geometer.

What will psychogeography, dérive, and soundwalking, soundmapping bring me next? I can never know in advance, and that's the whole beauty of it. Besides, my soundwalking practise is slowly developing into a full-blown Soundscape Ecology, since after 20 years one gets to know Soundscapes really well.

I hope to contribute something to active noise control in the world. I think that I know how to improve our soundscapes to make them more "ecologically friendly". One needs to do a lot of modelling, and that's what I've done over these last few decades. I have sought to understand the greater ecological soundscape in this region, have made my own makeshift noise maps. I am ready to go live with part of my research. Please stay tuned.

I HEART TRAINS

TRAINS - Prolegomenon to A Soundscape Ecology

I have been a lover of trains for as long as I can remember. I happened to have lived more or less next to train tracks for most of my life and so for whatever reason, I decided that I would be fascinated by trains. Really, I have to admit, it's the sounds they make.

Today I was noticing the effects that trains have on the immediate environs. The vibrations are so intense, a large - and long - cargo train passing by has a really extensive effect on the immediate ecoscape around it.

For one, you can notice how the bird life has had to adapt to the passing of trains. I have to say that trains do not pass all that often here, but you do get one every hour or so, give or take, if you include passenger trains. It's interesting though to see how birds have adapted to the passenger trains in late afternoon and early evening. At least that's what I was studying earlier today.

This is after all a Prolegomenon TOWARDS an eventual full-blown soundscape ecology of the regions that I have lived in, of this place I call home, in Quebec, Canada, in the so-called Greater Montreal Region. I wanted to start it off talking about trains mainly because I was doing some Soundwalking today and made some fine recordings that I am happy to have in my personal archive. Secondly, though, I really have always been mesmerized by the sound of passing trains and lived my life around the train tracks between Montreal and the South Shore, so that's another reason I wanted to start with trains.

All I will add for now is that it's really arduous work, the soundscaping. It's not a technical problem any more of actually making the recordings, in fact I've ceased being obsessed with sound quality. I do it mainly for collecting so many pointers, audio references. I know I can make the professional quality recordings any time I want. When I go soundwalking it's for another purpose. These are philosophical walks, what I like to call speculative "random walks". They are voyages deep into my environs, studying every last sound with meticulous care, systematically cataloguing the sounds and sonic experiences of my everyday life and the ambient world around me.

In any case, you will be surprised by the scale and scope of my undertaking, going on 20 years working with environments, sounds, technology. It is unique in the world and is slowly being unveiled day after day. I'm good for the next 40 years with the reference materials that I have put together. I hope you are thirsty to hear what I've been up to. As always, thanks for dropping in.
